OmniRoute: One Endpoint for Every AI Provider
Cursor hits Claude's rate limit. You switch to OpenAI manually. Then Gemini. Then back. OmniRoute turns this dance into a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint at localhost:20128 that routes across 20+ providers with quota-aware fallback. Built from 9router and CLIProxyAPI DNA, battle-tested with 83K stars and real deployment scars.
You're halfway through a refactoring session in Cursor when Claude hits its rate limit. You open .env, swap in your OpenAI key, restart the agent. Twenty minutes later, OpenAI's quota runs dry. Back to Gemini. Then Mistral. By the time you've cycled through providers, you've spent more time managing credentials than writing code.
OmniRoute turns that dance into localhost:20128/v1—a single OpenAI-compatible endpoint that routes across 20+ providers with automatic fallback. When one account hits its limit, the gateway tries the next target transparently. No manual key rotation, no restart, no tracking which service still has quota.
The Credential Sprawl Problem
AI coding assistants—Cursor, Cline, Continue, Aider—expect you to bring your own API keys. If you want uptime, you maintain accounts with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, maybe Groq and Cohere. Each tool gets its own configuration file. Each provider has its own rate limit. When something breaks mid-session, you're switching credentials by hand and hoping the next one works.
The operational cost compounds: tracking which account still has quota, remembering which provider works for which task, writing shell scripts to test availability before launching an agent. OmniRoute packages that solution.
One Endpoint, Twenty Routing Strategies
Point your tools at localhost:20128/v1 and OmniRoute handles the rest. The gateway implements 20 routing strategies—quota, cost, health, latency, task fit, session continuity. When Claude's limit hits, the system tries Gemini, then OpenAI, selecting candidates based on real-time availability and your preferences.
Quota-aware fallback means you configure all your accounts once and let the gateway decide which provider answers each request. The complexity you've been managing in environment variables and retry logic moves into middleware.
Real Tools, Real Integrations
The repository documents compatibility with Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, OpenCode, Cline, Copilot CLI, Aider, Continue, Goose, and OpenClaw—any client that speaks OpenAI's wire format. First-class MCP and A2A support adds 95 tools that let agents inspect quotas, select routing combos, and manage gateway state through JSON-RPC.
Kimi/Moonshot AI and Cheaper Inference back the project as Open Source Friends, with native provider support for Cheaper Inference baked in.
Where It Came From
OmniRoute originated as a 9router fork, influenced by CLIProxyAPI's TypeScript approach. It joins LiteLLM, OpenRouter, and Portkey in a growing set of AI gateways—each solving similar problems with different trade-offs. The release v3.8.52 shipped 1,442 changes, 1,386 commits, 306 contributors, and 1,369 pull requests in one cycle.
The Deployment Reality
Self-hosting introduces operational considerations. Requests can return HTTP 503 when all candidate targets are filtered out—unrecognized model IDs or missing credentials trigger empty routing tables. Upstream compatibility varies: OpenCode's free tier returned 403 errors because the service expected requests to originate from its own client. Docker deployments face memory pressure under long coding contexts—two overlapping responses pushed memory usage past 12 GiB, beyond the default container limits.
These are growing pains for a project moving this fast. The repository documents them openly.
Who Should Run This
If you've ever switched API keys mid-Cursor session or written fallback logic in a shell script, OmniRoute abstracts that pattern into infrastructure. You're already managing multiple providers—the gateway handles credential selection and retry logic so your tools see one stable endpoint. Self-hosted, open-source, solving the problem you've been solving manually.
